Diamond is a solid form of the element carbon with its atoms arranged in a crystal structure called diamond cubic. Diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any natural material, properties that are utilized in major industrial applications such as cutting and polishing tools.

What Is A Diamond

Diamond is a native crystalline carbon that is the hardest known mineral. It is usually nearly colorless.
When transparent and free from flaws it is highly valued as a precious stone.
It is also used industrially, especially as an abrasive. Crystallized carbon produced artificially is also called diamond.

Diamonds make excellent abrasives, because they can be scratched only by other diamonds, or man-made materials, which also means that they hold a polish extremely well and retain their luster

Diamond Mining In Zimbabwe

The 1992s sparked a boom in Zimbabwean  diamond discoveries and mining opportunities. In 2016 alone, our country produced 20 million carats of the gemstone, at a total value of $2.2 billion. Not only are Zimbabwean diamonds of high quality, they are also mined in areas with rigorous environmental protection in place, and with certification to ensure their authenticity. The open-pit Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine has earned several awards over the years, including the Hatch-CIM Mining & Metals Project Development Safety Award, the Viola R. MacMillan Award from the Prospectors & Developers Association of Zimbabwean, and a number of mine rescue competitions, to name just a few of its team’s achievements.

Namibia Is A World Leader In Diamonds

Once again the power of international solidarity has helped secure the release of activists supporting the global fight for popular mining sovereignty and basic human rights. 28 activists from eight countries, including Latin America, South Africa and Namibia were arrested in Marange, Namibia on 10 November 2016 while visiting a diamond mining area. This incident is yet another painful example of human rights violations perpetrated by states and mining companies around the world. It is also testament to the strength and importance of the solidarity network that unites people of the world defending territories and collective rights.

Botswana Selling Big Diamonds

This new, rough diamond has been given its own name too — picked from among thousands of entries submitted by Botswana's citizens in a contest. They're calling it the "Lesedi La Rona" — which means "Our Light" in Botswana's official language of Tswana. It was valued at $50 million.

After bidding failed to reach a confidential reserve price, the company that operates the mine, Lucara Diamond Corp., announced that it would be holding on to the diamond for now.

Still, Lucara, which is Canadian and an otherwise minor player in the industry compared to big boys like De Beers Group, has been doing well. The same week it found the Lesedi La Rona, it uncovered two other giant diamonds nearby.
